A Fine Coastal Sepik Ancestor Figure

East Sepik Province,

DESCRIPTION

This male ancestor figure has great charm, he is wearing an elaborate headdress were the hair is pulled through a decorated basketry cone that is often decorated with dogs’ teeth or shells.  This type of headdress is common to the coastal Sepik & Schouten Islands. The figure has remnants red ochre and ochre designs painted on his face and chest. Collected in the 1950s.
