A Fine Wooden Container

Tutsi

Rwanda or Burundi

17 x 6 cms

DESCRIPTION

This small incredibly delicately carved vessel has sides almost as thin as a basket of the same shape and size. It only weighs 44grams, whereas a fibre basket of approximately the same size weighs about 30 grams. It has a strong zigzag lattice design decorating the body; the lid has a reduced version of the same design with the  alternate triangles coloured in black instead of the natural colour of the wood, as seen in the body of the piece. Wooden containers were carved by Tutsi men, sometimes mimicking the shape of their celebrated conical baskets, which were made by women.
