'Asafo' Flag

Fante,

Ghana

DESCRIPTION

Asafo cotton applique flag for company 'No. 4', red field featuring three figures, one carrying a basket, blue/white checkered border, fringe.

Flags (frankaa) like this are the emblems of Fante Asafo companies, militias that play important  roles balancing the power of paramount chiefs. Towns have between two and fourteen companies each with their own name, number, emblems and shrine. These brightly coloured and highly graphic flags are displayed during festivals, ceremonies and funerals. Each unique flag either depicts an historical event, identifies the company with an animal, image of power or illustrates a confrontational proverb to threaten other rival companies.
