Bamileke Chief’s or Titleholder’s Hat, Cameroon Grasslands

A rare, early 20th century example of the iconic Cameroon headdress, ashetu, of exceptional height, richly textured with dozens of long fiber “tufts “ tipped and banded with red or blue, resembling hairstyles worn by high-status men for rituals and ceremonies in the Grasslands chieftaincies.  Cotton, crocheted or knotting technique

CONDITION

In good overall condition, has a small hole on backside which has an old patch and is mostly covered by the pegs or tufts
