DESCRIPTION

Domestic and wild animal masks are danced as part of the Gbagba performances amongst the Baule in a series of amusing skits that represent a microcosm of the human world. They are performed to mock and poke fun at social stereotypes and usually draw a moral. This mask represents the Bush Cow, and shows signs of considerable age from the rear. It is sensitively carved with with gentle rounded volumes and has a deep brown patina.
