Stone Mace Head

Highlands

Papua New Guinea

4.25 x 5 in

DESCRIPTION

Pierced stone headed clubs are produced in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, including balls, eggs, flat disks, serrated-edge disks,  oval disks, stars and hand grenade shapes, but Blackwood’s detailed description is of the round headed type only.  We must therefore presume that the final shape of the club head is limited only by the shape of the round or flat river stone from which it was fashioned and the skill of the maker.

It is said that the star shape was the most difficult to create and therefore accorded the most respect, a fitting reminder that the words archaic or stone age do not have to mean primitive. (From tribalartbrokers.net)
