Tambaran house panel

Maprik

Papua New Guinea

108 x 46 cm

DESCRIPTION

These panels were used to decorated the impressive sanctuary Tambaran house in the Maprik area. In these houses boys were initiated into manhood and other rituals were performed which were kept a secret for women.  Possibly a yam spirit is depicted here as the central figure, flanked by totemic hornbills. Such yam spirits watch over the yam gardens and promote the fertility.
