A rare round shoulder shield that would permit the warrior to have his hands to be free for using the bow and arrow in warfare. The round wood plank has a good patina from age and use, and the finely woven bilum bag shows good signs of age and being on this piece for a very long time.
Good condition with old and fragile dry bilum fibers. There is a white painted "LF/F14" collection number on the back.
Published in the book “Shields of Melanesia ”, 2003, Figure 3.26 on page 55. Ex- Coote collection, Ex- Leo Fleischmann collection, Ex- John Friede collection, and ex- Michael Hamson who published this shield as figure 19 in his 2015 San Francisco catalog.
