DESCRIPTION

A rare old Hignands shield with original white kaolin painting. The wood shield has small fine zig-zags carved into the surface and the top is bound with rattan. The original bark handle is intact as well as the strap and bilum bag that would have held a bunch of arrows. The overall patina is good and dark form age and use.

CONDITION

Fine condition with a good dark patina form aage and use.

Provenance

Previously in the JOLIKA / Friede collection, ex- Fine Arts Museum De Young, San Francisco, Ex- Sotheby's Paris, December 2007. Published in the book "New Guinea Highlands, Art form the Jolika Collection" figure 6.16.
